Air Conditioner Maintenance Tips

The air conditioning unit is one of the most important appliances in a home. It keeps us cool during those hot summer days. These trusty devices need regular maintenance and checkup to keep them at their peak. This also keeps the energy bills low and prevents unexpected repair costs.

Follow these simple steps in maintaining your air conditioner:

Check the filter. The filter is located near the return air grill or the air handler. It helps in reducing the flow of dust into the air. This has to be checked and changed regularly to keep the air conditioner efficient. If possible, the filter should be changed monthly. However, every few months will do. You can purchase disposable filters for this regular maintenance.

Clean vents. The vents should be cleaned and dusted every few months. If you have not done this for a long time, a professional can provide a thorough cleaning for the air vents.

Clear up the condensing unit. Make sure that the condensing unit is not covered. This part of the air conditioner is responsible for drawing air into the system. Clear up any chairs or bushes that are around the condensing unit. There should be at least two feet of clearance around it.

Keep the coil clean. The condenser coil outside of the house should be kept clean. You can vacuum any dirt or fallout in or around the unit. The coils inside the house should be cleaned, as well. If these are not easy to get to, ask for professional help.

Check the Freon levels. Since air conditioners do not consume Freon, it does not need to be filled. However, low Freon levels could mean a leak somewhere. This can be an issue for older units that vibrate and cause leaks through the years of use.

Have a yearly system maintenance service. An annual checkup and maintenance from the professionals is a must to cover up things you can’t do. They can check the electrical controls, Freon levels, and coils. They also clean the drain and the air conditioner using high-pressure vacuum. It’s ideal to schedule the professional service a month before the cooling season starts.
